Shielding your deck from the sun’s UV rays is a safe and cost-effective way to extend the life of your outdoor retreat.
Spring is FINALLY here. At Advantage, one way we can tell it’s getting warmer is the influx of calls we get from customers and general deck owners like you who are looking for a fast and affordable way to finish their deck.
Do you need a way to liven up the color AND protect your hardwood deck from ultraviolet rays without having to apply coat after coat of chemical sealers? Simply follow this step-by-step guide and you’ll extend the life and beauty of your deck:
- Sweep excess dirt, debris & leaves from your deck surface (make sure gaps are cleared).
- Pre-rinse the surface with a garden hose.
- Wait until the deck surface is completely dry (at least 24 hours in most areas).
- Using a standard 3/8″ nap paint roller, apply a specially formulated deck oil finish for hardwood decking (like Ipe Oil™).
- Rub in any excess or pooled liquid that remains after 5 minutes using a dry rag.
- Let dry completely.
FOR BEST RESULTS:
- Avoid applying under full sun
- Don’t apply more than one coat in a season
- Avoid applying if rain is forecast within 24 hours
- Avoid applying in extreme hot or cold temperatures
That’s it. Following these steps will result in a vibrant looking deck that will last longer due to increased protection from the sun’s rays. If you need help, or have a question, please don’t hesitate to post your question below or call us toll free:
last week cleaned porch and applied penofin to it, problem is about seven hours later it poured, now the porch has water marks and looks terrible, how can i get the wood back to looking great, i tried power washing but it did not help, any solutions will be helpful. thanks john farrer
John,
Sounds like a sticky situation. You have two options. One is to let it fade out and reapply. Two is see if you can hand rub the deck with the oil and a rag. As long as it is not applied too heavy it should be fine. Normally, I would not recommend two coats to someone because it can end up too think and not completely soak in. But, it sounds like a good amount washed off with the rain. Hard to say without seeing it. Feel free to contact us anytime. Good luck!

Does Cumuru decking installed in an enclosed room still need to be spaced? Is it better to use Messers cleaner and brightner on new pre-installed boards that have been sanded or just wash before applying oil? Do the boards need to be oiled on all four sides because they are inside?
Pat,
In terms of the enclosed room is this going to be heated or air conditioned area? Is this going to be installed over a sub floor or directly over the joist? The reason I’m asking these questions is to determine the proper material for you to use in your application. Once we figure out the proper material then we can move forward with finishing. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing back from you.
