Should You Oil Ipe Before or After Installation?

If you’re installing an Ipe deck, you might be wondering when to apply Ipe Oil. Should you finish the boards before installing them, or wait until the deck is built?

For most Ipe decks, we recommend applying the oil after installation. However, if your deck has limited ventilation underneath, finishing all four sides of the boards beforehand may be worth considering.

The right approach depends on your deck’s design. Either way, proper preparation and application matter just as much as timing.

Should You Oil Ipe Before or After Installation?

For a typical outdoor deck, install the Ipe decking first, then apply Ipe Oil after the wood has had time to weather. This makes the job easier and helps you avoid scratching freshly oiled boards during installation.

Ipe is naturally resistant to rot and decay, so oil isn’t necessary to preserve its durability. Instead, the main reason to apply a finish is to maintain its rich brown color and provide UV protection.

If you leave Ipe unfinished, it will gradually turn silver-gray. That’s a natural weathering process, not a sign that the wood is rotting.

There is one exception. If your deck has limited airflow underneath, we recommends finishing all four sides of the boards before installation, once they’ve acclimated. This allows you to coat surfaces that may be difficult to reach later.

Why Wait Until After Installation?

For most projects, finishing the installed deck is the simpler option. You can apply the oil across the exposed surface at once, avoid handling freshly finished boards during installation, and refresh the finish later without removing any decking.

Pre-finishing has its place, but it also takes more time and space. Unless your deck’s design calls for all-sided coverage, applying oil to the exposed surface after installation is generally the more practical choice.

Keep in mind that new Ipe shouldn’t necessarily be oiled immediately after installation. DeckWise recommends allowing new hardwood to weather for at least six to eight weeks before cleaning and applying Ipe Oil. In colder northern climates, the manufacturer recommends waiting until spring after the winter. This allows the wood to dry and helps prepare its surface to absorb the finish.

How to Apply Ipe Oil

Once the wood is ready, follow these steps to help achieve an even finish without leaving the surface tacky.

1. Clean the Deck and Let It Dry

Sweep dirt, leaves, and debris from the deck surface and gaps between boards. If the wood has turned gray or developed stubborn stains, you might need a suitable hardwood cleaner and brightener.

After rinsing, allow the wood to dry completely. We recommend at least 24 hours in most areas, although weather and moisture conditions may require more time.

2. Apply a Thin, Even Coat

Stir the oil thoroughly before use. Apply it with a roller, stain brush, or pad applicator, working with the grain and maintaining a wet edge.

Avoid applying the finish in direct sunlight or when the wood is hot to the touch. DeckWise recommends applying Ipe Oil when surface temperatures are between 40°F and 90°F and avoiding application if rain is expected within 24 to 48 hours.

3. Wipe Away Excess Oil

This step is especially important with dense hardwoods like Ipe. The wood can absorb only so much oil, and excess finish left on the surface may become sticky and attract dirt.

After about five minutes, use a clean, dry rag to wipe away excess oil and any pooled liquid. The goal is an even, natural-looking finish rather than a wet surface with oil sitting on top.

4. Dispose of Oily Rags Properly

Rags soaked with oil-based finishes can spontaneously combust if handled or stored improperly. Follow the product label’s disposal instructions, and never leave oil-soaked rags piled up or balled together.

How Often Should You Oil an Ipe Deck?

We recommend applying a fresh coat approximately every two years, depending on your climate and the appearance you want to maintain. Decks exposed to intense sunlight and harsh weather may need attention sooner.

If you’d rather let the wood weather naturally, you can skip routine oiling for color maintenance. Your Ipe will gradually turn silver-gray, but it will retain its natural durability.

Final Thoughts

For most Ipe decks, install the boards first, let the wood weather, and then apply Ipe Oil. If the deck has limited ventilation underneath, finishing all four sides before installation may be the better option.
