One of the big selling points of composite decking is simple: you don’t have to stain, paint, or oil it every year. As a result, that’s a big reason homeowners may choose products from Trex, TimberTech, Deckorators, and other major manufacturers. And I get it. Who wants to spend a perfectly good Saturday refinishing a deck if they don’t have to?
Although composite decking typically needs less work than many traditional wood decks, low maintenance doesn’t mean no maintenance. That’s something I’ve had to explain more than a few times over the years.
Once fall rolls around, we often start getting questions about slippery decking. At the same time, homeowners may notice wet leaves piling up, mornings get colder, and shady areas can stay damp longer. You know the kind of fall morning I’m talking about the grass is wet, the deck is damp, and you probably haven’t even finished your first cup of coffee yet. Eventually, winter arrives with frost, snow, and ice.
So, does composite decking get slippery in the fall and winter?
Yes, it can. However, the composite board itself usually isn’t the biggest problem. More often, whatever sits on top of the board may cause the trouble. And honestly, isn’t that true of most outdoor surfaces?
Why Composite Decking Can Get Slippery
I’ve worked around enough decks over the years to know almost any outdoor walking surface can become slippery under the right conditions. Indeed, wood, composite, PVC, concrete, stone, and tile can all get slick when water, algae, frost, or ice covers them. I’ve stepped onto enough wet job sites to know you probably don’t need a laboratory to prove that point.
In that respect, composite decking is generally no different.
A clean composite deck with a good embossed texture can provide decent traction. However, once wet leaves, pollen, dirt, algae, or ice cover that surface, you’re no longer walking on a clean deck board.
Instead, you’re walking on whatever sits on top of it. It sounds almost too simple when you put it that way, doesn’t it?
Although that distinction may sound obvious, it matters.
Over the years, I’ve seen people blame their decking when a thin layer of organic debris may have actually made the surface slick. Sometimes the deck board gets blamed for something a broom could’ve fixed in five minutes.
Wet Leaves Are One of the Biggest Fall Problems

Leaves look harmless enough until they get wet.
However, a layer of wet maple leaves on a deck can become surprisingly slick. In fact, step on them the wrong way, and you’ll probably understand pretty quickly what I mean. I’ve done it, and there’s usually that half second where your arms start flying around and you hope nobody saw you.
Even though leaves may keep falling for several weeks, I probably wouldn’t wait until the trees finish dropping them before cleaning the deck. I know it’s tempting. You clean the deck Monday, and by Tuesday afternoon it may look like you never touched it. That’s fall for you.
For one thing, leaves, pine needles, acorns, and other debris can trap moisture against your decking. Because of that, over the years, we’ve generally recommended keeping this material from piling up during fall.
At the same time, board gaps may also deserve some attention.
Those gaps don’t exist just to make the deck look nice. More importantly, they help water drain and give small debris somewhere to go. However, if wet leaves and dirt pack those spaces, water may sit on the surface longer.
So, get the broom or leaf blower out every so often. After all, it’s probably a lot easier than dealing with a slippery mess later. Five or ten minutes here and there can potentially save you a much bigger cleanup down the road.
Mold, Mildew, and Algae Can Make Things Worse
Here’s another misconception we hear occasionally: composite decking can’t grow mold because it isn’t wood.
However, it’s not quite that simple. Wouldn’t it be nice if buying composite meant mold suddenly forgot where your backyard was?
Mold and algae don’t necessarily need to grow inside the decking to cause trouble. Instead, dirt, pollen, leaves, food residue, and other organic material can collect on the surface. From there, mold, mildew, and algae may grow on that material.
Meanwhile, shady decks may deserve extra attention because they can stay damp longer after rain. Likewise, decks around trees, pools, ponds, and heavily landscaped areas may face the same problem. In my experience, those shady corners are usually where I’d look first.
So, if you see a green or dark film forming on your decking, I wouldn’t ignore it. Besides looking lousy, the film can potentially make the deck considerably more slippery when wet. If my boots start sliding around while I’m walking across a deck, I’m probably not waiting another month to clean it.
What About Snow and Ice?

Now, this one is pretty straightforward.
Ice is slippery.
Quite simply, I don’t care if your deck cost $5,000 or $50,000. If a sheet of ice covers it, you’re walking on ice, not the deck. There’s probably no premium decking board out there that can negotiate with Mother Nature on that one.
Frost, however, can be a little sneakier.
You might walk outside on a cold morning and think the deck looks perfectly dry. However, a thin layer of frost can be difficult to see, particularly on lighter colored or heavily patterned composite boards. We’ve all probably had one of those mornings where the driveway looks fine until your first step tells you otherwise.
So, take it easy on cold mornings. There’s certainly no prize for being the first person down the deck stairs.
More importantly, stairs may deserve even more attention. Although a little frost on a flat deck can cause problems, frost on the first step down could ruin your morning pretty quickly. Personally, stairs are probably the first place I’d check when temperatures hover around freezing.
Does the Texture of Composite Decking Matter?

Absolutely.
Not all composite decking has the same surface. That’s one reason I don’t like lumping every composite product into one big category.
For example, modern composite and PVC decking usually has some type of embossed wood grain texture. Besides helping the boards look more like real wood, that texture may provide additional traction.
However, manufacturers can use different patterns and texture depths across their product lines. Pick up a few samples side by side sometime, and you’ll probably feel the difference immediately.
Trex, TimberTech, and Deckorators all manufacture several decking collections. So, although two products may both fall under the broad “composite decking” category, they can feel quite different under your feet. Would you buy tires based only on the fact they’re all made from rubber? Probably not. Decking may deserve the same kind of closer look.
For that reason, if slip resistance matters a lot for your project, you may want to check the manufacturer’s published testing for the specific product you’re considering rather than judging the entire brand.
In particular, this can become important for pool decks, stairs, commercial projects, docks, shaded areas, and homes in climates with long wet seasons. A dry backyard deck in Arizona and a shaded deck in the Pacific Northwest probably don’t live the same life, so why treat them like they do?
Is Grooved or Heavily Textured Decking Always Better?
Not necessarily.
A more aggressive surface texture may improve traction, though deeper grooves can also collect dirt.
In other words, that’s the tradeoff. Building materials are full of tradeoffs, and anyone who tells you otherwise probably hasn’t worked with enough of them.
A smoother board may clean more easily, while a heavily embossed board may feel different underfoot. Still, neither feature necessarily tells the whole story.
That’s why I’ve always preferred looking at the entire project instead of choosing decking based on one specification. I’ve never been a fan of choosing a building material because one number on a brochure looked impressive.
Where will you build the deck?
How much sun will it receive?
Are there trees overhead?
Will people walk across it straight out of a swimming pool?
Does the design include stairs?
Does your area get snow?
You get the idea. A deck doesn’t live in a showroom. It lives outside.
Ultimately, those questions can tell you a lot more than a sample board sitting under perfect lighting in a showroom.
How to Keep Composite Decking from Getting Slippery in Fall

Fortunately, you probably don’t need to do anything complicated. This isn’t one of those maintenance jobs where you need half the tool aisle at the hardware store.
First, sweep or blow leaves off regularly. Although waiting until every leaf falls may sound easier, I wouldn’t let wet leaves sit for weeks. Yes, you’ll probably have to do it again. That’s life with trees.
Next, keep the gaps between boards clear. After all, you want rain and melting snow to drain instead of pooling on the deck. If the water has somewhere to go, you might as well let it go there.
Also, clean dirt and organic buildup. Follow the decking manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations, and pay particular attention to shaded areas where the surface may stay damp. Personally, I’d rather do a light cleaning twice than wait until the deck needs one miserable all day scrub.
At the same time, watch your stairs. Frost, algae, wet leaves, and ice can make deck stairs especially hazardous. Again, that’s where I’d probably spend a little extra time.
Every so often, move planters and outdoor furniture. Otherwise, moisture and debris can collect underneath them where you might not notice it. You’d probably be surprised what can hide underneath a planter that hasn’t moved since Memorial Day.
Finally, trim vegetation when necessary. If bushes and tree limbs block sunlight and airflow around the deck, the surface may stay wet considerably longer. Sometimes improving airflow might do more good than buying another bottle of cleaner.
Thankfully, none of this should require much work. For the most part, it comes down to keeping the deck clean. Nothing glamorous there, but good maintenance usually isn’t glamorous.
Be Careful Removing Snow from Composite Decking
When snow finally arrives, you may want to resist the urge to attack your deck with whatever shovel happens to be leaning against the garage. We’ve all been there. It’s cold, you’re in a hurry, and the closest shovel suddenly looks like the right shovel.
After all, you probably don’t want to scratch the surface.
Instead, follow the decking manufacturer’s current snow and ice removal instructions for your particular product. If you use a shovel, choose one that won’t gouge or damage the deck surface, and work carefully. Why potentially turn a twenty minute snow cleanup into a permanent scratch you’ll stare at for the next ten years?
Likewise, the same advice applies to ice melting products. Don’t grab a random bag from the garage and assume you can safely use it on every type of decking. That old bag of mystery ice melt that’s been sitting behind the lawn mower for six winters? I’d probably read the label before throwing it all over an expensive deck.
Trex, TimberTech, and Deckorators each publish care and maintenance instructions for their products. So, follow the instructions for the decking you actually own. When in doubt, that’s probably where I’d start rather than taking advice from somebody’s neighbor’s cousin who “does construction.”
Over the years, I’ve seen too many people damage perfectly good building materials because they assumed stronger cleaner, more pressure, or a more aggressive tool must work better.
Usually, it doesn’t. Sometimes more elbow grease can just create more damage.
Can Composite Decking Be More Slippery Than Wood?
Now, this is where broad statements can get dangerous. Ask ten people this question online, and you’ll probably get twelve answers.
I’ve walked on slick composite decks, and I’ve walked on slick wood decks. At the same time, I’ve also walked on both types when they provided excellent traction.
Ultimately, surface conditions can matter tremendously. That’s why I get a little skeptical whenever someone declares one entire category “slippery” and another one “not slippery.”
For example, dense hardwoods such as Ipe have a long history as exterior walking surfaces and can offer good natural slip resistance. However, even an Ipe deck won’t magically give you traction if wet leaves or ice cover it. I’ve been around Ipe for a long time, and as much as I like the stuff, it still has to obey the laws of physics.
Likewise, a clean, properly maintained composite deck with a good surface texture can provide very good footing.
So, rather than asking whether wood or composite is slippery, I’d probably ask whether the specific decking product you’re considering provides enough traction for your project.
In my opinion, that’s a much more useful question. It may not make for as catchy of an argument, but it’ll probably help you build a better deck.
Pay Extra Attention to North Facing and Shaded Decks
If you’ve ever maintained two decks on opposite sides of the same house, you’ve probably noticed how differently they can age. Sometimes you’d swear they belonged to two different houses.
Simply put, sunlight and airflow can make a huge difference.
A deck with good southern exposure might dry quickly after a rainstorm. Meanwhile, a shaded deck on the north side of the house can remain damp much longer. I’ve seen one side of a property bone dry while the shaded side still felt damp underfoot hours later.
Then, throw a couple of big oak trees overhead, and now you’ve potentially got leaves, shade, pollen, moisture, and organic debris all working together. Sounds like a nice backyard until you’re the one holding the broom, right?
Although those conditions don’t necessarily make composite a bad choice, you’ll probably need to clean the deck more often. That’s not a knock against the material. It’s just part of understanding the environment where you’re putting it.
Is Composite Decking Maintenance Free?
No.
Frankly, I don’t think anyone should expect to install an outdoor deck and never touch it again. If somebody ever invents a deck that cleans itself, though, I’ll gladly take a look.
In fact, we’ve made this point for years: there’s a big difference between low maintenance and maintenance free. Those two phrases may sound similar in an advertisement, but they can feel worlds apart once you actually own the deck.
Composite decking can cut out a lot of the work people associate with traditional wood decking. For example, you generally aren’t sanding and staining it every year.
Without question, that’s a major advantage. For a lot of homeowners, that alone may make composite worth considering.
However, you still have to clean it. A broom probably hasn’t become obsolete just because you bought composite decking.
Mother Nature doesn’t care what the brochure says. Eventually, leaves will fall on your deck. Likewise, birds may make a mess on it. Then, pollen can cover it. Come winter, snow may land on it. And throughout the year, people will probably track dirt across it. That’s outdoor living. You get the barbecue, the patio furniture, and the nice evenings outside, but you also get pollen and bird droppings. Fair trade, I suppose.
In short, every deck will probably need some attention.
The Bottom Line
Composite decking can become slippery during fall and winter, especially when wet leaves, algae, frost, snow, or ice cover the surface.
However, I wouldn’t consider that a reason to avoid composite decking. I’ve seen plenty of composite decks perform very well through wet falls and snowy winters.
Instead, I’d consider it a reason to keep your deck clean. Pretty simple advice, I know, but sometimes the simple stuff may matter most.
Remove leaves and debris regularly. At the same time, keep the board gaps open. Also, clean organic buildup before it can turn into a slick film. Then, during winter, pay particular attention to stairs and areas where frost or ice tends to form. None of those jobs should consume your weekend, either. Stay ahead of them, and they’re usually pretty easy.
And if you’re shopping for new decking, don’t assume every composite board provides identical traction. Instead, compare the specific products you’re considering from Trex, TimberTech, Deckorators, or another manufacturer. When traction matters a lot, you may want to look at the manufacturer’s published slip resistance data for the individual product. Better yet, get your hands on a sample if you can. I still like touching and looking at a building material before I make up my mind about it.
Ultimately, a little common sense can go a long way here.
After all, even the best deck board in the world probably can’t make a sheet of ice less slippery. And if somebody tells you theirs can, I’d probably keep my wallet in my pocket.
