At AdvantageLumber.com, we get a lot of questions about wide composite decking. Homeowners love the bold, modern look that wider planks deliver — fewer seams, a cleaner appearance, and a luxurious feel underfoot. The two sizes customers ask about most often are 8-inch wide and 12-inch wide composite deck boards.
After years of selling, installing, and observing thousands of decks across the country, we’ve made a deliberate choice: we stock 8″ wide PVC decking, but we do not carry 12″ wide composite deck boards. Here’s why — and why we believe the 8″ option is the sweet spot for beauty and long-term performance.
The Problem with 12″ Wide Composite Decking
The main issue with 12″ wide (or wider) composite and capped composite boards is cupping and curling.
Even though today’s composites are far more stable than the first-generation products, they still expand and contract with seasonal temperature and humidity changes. The wider the board, the more total movement occurs across its width. Over time — especially in climates with big swings in weather — the edges of ultra-wide boards can begin to curl upward.
It’s not as dramatic as what you sometimes see with wide natural wood planks, but it’s still very noticeable. In extreme cases, the raised edges can actually become a tripping hazard, create unsightly gaps, or make the surface feel uneven. We’ve seen it happen enough times on job sites and customer decks that we simply can’t recommend 12″ wide composite in good conscience.
The Sweet Spot: 8″ Wide PVC Decking from TimberTech
That’s why we’re big fans of TimberTech’s 8″ wide PVC decking (actual finished width of 7.25″). TimberTech offers these wider boards in two of their premium capped polymer (100% PVC) collections:
- TimberTech Vintage Collection® – The flagship line with multi-tone coloring, deep wire-brushed wood grain, and the most realistic look in the industry.
- TimberTech Harvest Collection® – Slightly more subtle cathedral grain patterns and a great range of popular solid and blended colors.
Because these are full PVC boards (no wood fibers in the core), they have extremely low moisture absorption and minimal thermal expansion/contraction. That means the wider 7.25″ profile stays remarkably flat and stable season after season — even in harsh climates.
Over the years, the feedback we’ve received from contractors and homeowners on TimberTech’s wide PVC decking has been overwhelmingly positive:
- Virtually no cupping or edge curl
- Gorgeous wide-plank aesthetic with fewer seams
- Up to 50% fewer fasteners compared to standard 5.5″ boards
- Outstanding fade, stain, and scratch resistance
- Industry-leading warranties (many with 50-year fade & stain coverage)
Multi-Width Decking
Many homeowners are liking the look of multi-width deck boards. This is where you mix 6″ deck boards and 8″ deck boards. Many homeowners find this look more aesthetically pleasing opposed to just using the standard 6″ deck boards which has been used on decks for decades.
The Bottom Line
If you love the look of wide-plank decking, 8″ (7.25″ actual) TimberTech PVC gives you that upscale appearance without the headaches that come with 12″ composite boards. It’s the perfect balance of style, performance, and peace of mind.
